I'd like to keep the full php semantics with mandatory spaces required
only for non symbolic operators. Here's what I think as my final version:

$delims = '/(?:^|\\s*)(\\sand\\s|\\sx?or\\s|&&|\\|\\||[!()])(?:\\s*|$)/i';
