I got it, and unpacked the tarball onto my servers (PHP 4.3.11 and
PHP 5.0.4) and it ran just fine w/o modification.  So perhaps there's
something very odd about your server's PHP installation.

Could you perhaps send the results of an ?action=phpinfo 
(with $EnableDiag=1; in local/config.php)?
