Don't know if this would solve the problem, but you might try setting
cellspacing=2 (or whatever) to compensate for the loss of cellpadding.
 The two work differently in tables, and might not recreate the
redlines, while giving you the spacing you want.

Anyway, don't have time to try it out, but thought it might be
helpful.  Hope so!
