No, it isn't.

With or without a space, the same list item will be generated.

Some writers feel that a space makes it easier to read.

The space is important for indented lines and lists. If the next line 
starts with as many spaces as asterisks+spaces on the current line, then 
the next line will be part of the previous list item, respecting 
(:linebreaks:).

The next line is aligned with the first non-asterisk and non-space 
character above:

*  Item
    Part of the previous item, "P" aligned with "I"
*No space
  Part of the previous item ("P" aligned with "N")

You can have indented lists the same way, indenting with spaces instead 
of multiplying ** or ***:

* Parent item
   * Child list ("*" aligned with "P")
*New item
  *   Sub-list ("*" aligned with "N")
      * Nested sublist ("*" aligned with "S")

Same for the # hash character for numbered lists.

In these cases the number of spaces is important. If the number of 
spaces on the next line is different from the number of 
asterisks+spaces, the line will be preformatted instead of list item.
